In developing countries, healthcare is only available through underfunded public systems or unaffordable private systems. It’s a broken model that doesn’t cover the growing population. OneWorld Health believes where you are born should not determine your access to basic healthcare.
OneWorld Health has developed a model that provides affordable healthcare to the communities that need it most. Better still, OneWorld Health’s model doesn’t require ongoing support to keep the healthcare facility doors open. The facilities are staffed with trained nationals to meet the needs for affordable healthcare, while also helping the economic structure in the community thrive. In 2020, we partnered with OneWorld Health to build a clinic in Huembes, Nicaragua. Our first facility opened in spring 2021 in partnership with OneWorld Health – we will see the impact of this facility for years to come.
Story of Hope: Irene
Over a year ago Irene, age 9, was traveling with her father on the back of a boda boda (a motorcycle taxi which is a common form of transportation in East Africa) when out of nowhere a cargo truck struck the boda boda and she was ejected from the vehicle. She sustained a head injury as well as extensive lacerations all over her body. Thankfully, she was only miles from OneWorld Health’s Masindi-Kitara Medical Center (MKMC).
Upon her arrival the team immediately administered the appropriate pain medications, dressed her wounds and later tested her mental function. It was determined that Irene only suffered a minor concussion and not a more serious head injury. She was able to go home after a week and then she was monitored closely on a weekly outpatient basis to ensure her head injury didn’t develop into something more serious. Irene’s parents are forever grateful to the staff at MKMC for saving their daughter from what could have been a fatal situation.
